On this Revesby roof, the bottom tile on one of the hips had come loose and slipped out of line. The old pointing around it had cracked, and weeds were growing out of the gap.

We reset the tile back in position and repointed it, so it's sealed and sitting firm again.

Why loose hip tiles matter

Hip and ridge tiles are held in place by bedding and pointing. Over time that can crack and come away, especially on older roofs. Once it lets go, rain can get in under the cap, and the tile can keep moving until it falls off.

Things to look for on your roof

  • Cracked or missing pointing along hips and ridges

  • Hip or ridge tiles that look crooked or out of line

  • Weeds or moss growing out of the joints

  • Water stains on the ceiling near the edges of the house
